Waking up the body for 2009
The new year has seen a steady introduction to the sort of regimen I’ll need to sustain and build on to attain a sub 5hr Busselton Half Ironman. My swim on Monday at Riverton Leisureplex was only for 30mins but a swim nonetheless. My cycling into work has been honest. Caught up with Andy on my cycle in on Wed. Had a mountain biking dude pass us and we weren’t about to take away his moment of fame. He was travelling hard and fast for an MTB’er.
Yesterday was a good litmus test in very hot conditions. Dee and I did Jacob’s Ladder for 90mins early in the morning and I backed up with Front Runner training. I got there to learn we were doing a 5km time trial run. Damn! We did our 3km warm up and settled in for the time trial shortly after. I posted a 22min effort for this for 4min25sec/km average. I actually did the first 2km in 8mins so starting a little trend of pushing the first few kms at a hard pace. I’m going to have to store this mentally and try for a more even effort, especially if I want to run the next couple of half marathons consistently.
Cycle to work today. Dee and I have a big 21km bushwalk with backpacks planned for very early tomorrow morning. This will again be from the Bibbulmun track Northern Terminus at Kalamunda and 10.5km in to the first hut. Only 6 days to go till her Kilimanjaro Trek. Got her some snow goggles yesterday. Only have an insulated drinking hose to suit Camelbak hydration to buy from Wellington Surplus or Ranger Camping.
On a self-indulgent level, Paul McCartney has a new Tufo tyre for my Gravity Zero back wheel and I’m thinking I’ll get him to putone on the front wheel too as it seems to have a slow leak. I’ve signed up for Tuesday’s ATTA time trial for 3x 5km around Champion Lakes.
I’m actually thinking that while I’m in Melbourne I may travel all the way to Horsham (half way between Melb and Adelaide) for their triathlon on 25 January. I’ll need a lend of a bike but it could be p fun. I can then duck into Donald (like that one!) , my town of birth…and voted most boring town in Australia!
Nice hot weather in Perth. Consistently mid thirties. More swimming needed. A mate at work got a Giant Alliance TCR for Xmas from his girlfriend. Nice girlfriend!
I’m going to have to step up for some mid distance running (around 15kms) this month, in spite of the hot weather.
