Climb every mountain
Well, I just got off the phone briefly to Dee but the connection was very scratchy. She and the other 6 climbers are descending Mt Kilimanjaro as I type this. I couldn’t even extract from her whether she had summited. So that information is pending.
She sounds good though. Now its time for her to chill out in Zanzibar (after sorting out how much to pay the porters, cooks, guides, etc)
Today, I tried the Herne Hill 40km time trial. Now the good news was that I was 2mins quicker than the one I did at Mandogalup before Christmas. I can’t really attribute this to increased fitness. The Gravity Zero wheelset take most of the credit. Young 15yo Kenji Nener managed around 39.5kph so he will soon joint the 40kph club. I am not even in the 36kph club yet with the 40km plus time trials. But it will happen. Rod Mejias and Guy Pritchard both had blistering rides again.
Friday was just at 1.25km swim at Riverton. Yesterday was a good 60km hitout on the BFSR ride. Cyclosportif starts again with our first ride in Margaret River - Yee, haaah!! I will start some 15km runs with a friend who lives nearby. Should be good value - I did this with a great bloke called Terry Cameron some years ago when preparing for Busso Half Ironman.
My stated aim of going to do Busso Jetty Swim and Half Marathon have been undermined by a family visit for nearly two weeks from 17 Jan to 27 Jan during which I did minimal training. I really don’t think I have a 3.6km swim in me. I may see if I can team up with someone to share the load and get a 1.8km swim in.
Been pretty muggy here in Perth today (either that or our evap aircon isn’t working too well). Can’t wait to catch up with my ‘blonde’s news from Tanzania. She’s seen hippos, black rhinos, baby elephants, tigers, lions, etc, etc.
I’m going to give Tiger Airways a bit of a serve here. On the way from Perth to Melbourne, they checked my hand luggage and let me bring a set of allen keys so I could assemble a bmx bike I was bringing as a present. Of course, returning from Melbourne to Perth, I still had the allen keys. I assured the security guard that the very same allen keys were considered ok to bring on board on my flight out. He didn’t care and I gave him a blast for what seemed an arbitrary decision on a set of keys that are blunt and hardly dangerous. For his intransigence, I lost a $20 set of allen keys and Tiger Airways has lost a customer for life. I can’t believe how angry I got - but it was the principle. Anyway, down from my soapbox.
No other real news on the training front. There’s only really 13 weeks left till Busselton Half Ironman. Gotta get my diet together now.
Stay cool.
